 MILITARY THEMES

  2. The Dacian Wars

Under Domitian , Rome had come to terms with Decebalus, the king of the Dacians, and granted him an annual subsidy. This was a sore point with Rome and Trajan most likely would have wanted to rectify it. After being declared Augustus, Trajan stayed in Germany securing the border. One can speculate that he was making sure of the German border so he would not have the problems Domitian had when he ended up negotiating with the Dacians.

In 101 Trajan began his attack on Dacia. By 102, Trajan had advanced to the capital, Sarmizegetusa. At this point Decebalus submitted to Trajan, who allowed him to keep his kingdom as a client king. Trajan received the title "Dacicus" (conqueror of Dacia) and celebrated a triumph. The humiliation under Domitian had been erased.

The war began anew in 105 when Decebalus seized Roman fortifications on the Danube. Trajan regained control of the Danube area in the same year.

In 106 Trajan advanced again to Sarmizegetusa: this time he took the city. Decebalus escaped, but was pursued and comitted suicide. The kingdom was now annexed and a permanent Roman presence established.
