Historical Policies, Acts and Events 5. Congiarums From the word Congius, a measure of liquids, as modius is a measure of solids. A Congiarum is a giving of gifts from the emperor to the people, Originally as the word implied it was gifts of oil and wine but later it became gifts of silver, spices, corn, etc. The emperor Trajan records 3 Congiarums on his sestertii.
FIRST CONGIARUM This reverse depicts Trajan seated on high platform on a curule chair. An citizen is seated on a lower platform receiving gifts from a standing officer while another citizen ascends the stairs. A statue of Liberalitas holding tessera is in the background.
