As

  1. Although I list this coin as an as it has also been proposed as a medallion, presentation or trial type. This is a bronze as sized coin with 2 obverse busts of Trajan. It is a rare type but due to the number that can be found it is deemed not to be a mule or mint error however the exact purpose is unknown. The lack of SC would indicate a special purpose. An example of a sestertius sized medal lacking SC with Head of Trajan/Head of Jupiter exists in the Museo de Parigi.

RIC 713

RIC lists a COS VI version of this coin as well.

It should also be noted the firm of Harlan Berk, in sale 119, offered an unlisted early style bust and earlier legend type dating to the first period of Trajan's reign. This may indicate the coin was struck for some purpose throughout Trajan's reign.
